As the National Organizing Director for Stronger U.S., you will act as a thought partner to the Executive Director in building a long-term, national grassroots infrastructure capable of executing both issue and electoral campaigns. You must be an excellent trainer and coach and understand grassroots power building. You are responsible for managing and coaching State Organizing Directors through the successful development and execution of state capacity building plans with a collaborative process that engages both volunteers and staff.  You will hold State Organizing Directors accountable for meeting metrics-based goals. You are responsible for ensuring that organizing staff have the coaching, training, and support they need to build robust volunteer teams capable of power mapping, campaign planning, digital organizing, executing their own voter contact events and executing earned media events. You will receive ongoing professional development opportunities and are responsible for providing those opportunities for your staff as well. You are also responsible for fundraising. This includes individual donor outreach, assisting with foundation outreach and grant-writing and building grassroots power through a program of grassroots fundraising.

Key Responsibilities

  • Staff management, training, and coaching: Provide State Organizing Directors with the management, training, and coaching that they need to organize and win campaigns. An expert in remote management, you’ll travel for site visits and conduct one-to-one meetings with your staff, you’ll manage in-person staff meetings and trainings, and you’ll run conference calls and frequent phone or video meetings with your staff.

  • Strategic planning and program development: Act as a thought partner to the Executive Director on strategy and tactics for power building. Coach State Organizing Directors on using grassroots and grasstops organizing to meet the strategic power building goals in each key state. You will coach the state organizing staff on responding to policy threats as they arise and you will work to proactively identify organizing opportunities. You will facilitate a national grassroots planning process that includes volunteers.

  • Community organizing training and leadership development: Work with internal and external stakeholders to conceive and prepare training materials on a variety of issues and tactics for use nationally, on the state level, and for local grassroots trainings. Conduct group training on campaign skills and one-on-one coaching and leadership development sessions with group leaders. Ensure organizers are properly trained to develop volunteer leadership and hold organizers accountable for conducting excellent trainings and developing volunteer leaders.

  • Communications and organizational visibility: Work with state leadership and central staff to increase the organization’s media presence and name recognition through earned media events and digital organizing.

  • Fundraising: Build lasting relationships in the funder community and build resources for your work through foundations, major donors, event planning, and other grassroots fundraising opportunities. Manage and train state organizing directors to develop power in volunteer leaders through a program of grassroots fundraising.


Candidates must have at least 4 years of organizing experience. Relationship-based organizing and leadership development experience with personal story, one-to-one meetings, and building volunteer teams is required. The ideal candidate is passionate about community organizing and movement building and has a track record of managing programs that develop volunteer capacity to meet metrics-based goals as well as the ability to work effectively with all different types of people. VAN experience, issue campaign experience, and fundraising experience are a plus but not required. Compensation and Benefits:

Target annual compensation for this position is commensurate with the relevant professional experience and/or advanced degrees that a candidate has. Stronger U.S. offers a competitive benefits package.
